Integrated Effects of Root-Zone Temperatures and Phosphorus Levels on Aeroponically-Grown Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) in the Tropics

چکیده
In this study, butterhead lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Baby Butter) plants were grown at three root-zone temperatures (RZTs): 25 o C, 30 o C and ambient-RZT (A-RZT) ranging from 26 o C-42 o C while their shoots were maintained at hot ambient temperature ranging from 26 o C-42 o C. Three phosphorus (P) concentrations: -25% P (minus P, 23.25ppm), control (31.00ppm) and +25% P (plus P, 38.75ppm) were supplied to the plants at each RZT using Netherlands Standard Nutrient Solution. Interactions between RZT and P concentrations on productivity, root morphology, maximum photosynthetic O2 evolution (Pmax), P uptake and its partitioning between shoot and root were studied. Lettuce plants grown with the plus P concentration at 25 o C-RZT had the highest productivity, highest Pmax, highest shoot and root P concentrations. However, all the root morphological parameters studied were the greatest in plants grown with the minus P at 25 o C-RZT. Higher P concentration in the solution and 25 o C-RZT resulted in higher portion of the absorbed P partitioned to the shoots. Integrated effects of RZT and P concentration on the productivity, root morphology, photosynthesis and P uptake

An assessment of the role of ethylene in mediating lettuce (Lactuca sativa) root growth at high temperatures.
Growth of temperate lettuce (Lactuca sativa) plants aeroponically in tropical greenhouses under ambient root-zone temperatures (A-RZTs) exposes roots to temperatures of up to 40 degrees C during the middle of the day, and severely limits root and shoot growth. The role of ethylene in inhibiting growth was investigated with just-germinated (24-h-old) seedlings in vitro, and 10-d-old plants grown...
متن کاملEffect of Root-Zone Temperature on Growth and Quality of Hydroponically Grown Red Leaf Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Red Wave)
Soil temperature influences crop growth and quality under field and greenhouse conditions; however, precise investigation using controlled cultivation systems is largely lacking. We investigated effects of root-zone temperatures on growth and components of hydroponically grown red leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Red Wave) under a controlled cultivation system at 20 ̊C. Compared with ambient ...

متن کاملMineral Nutrition of Aeroponically Grown Subtropical and Temperate Crops in the Tropics with Manipulation of Root-Zone Temperature at Different Growth Irradiances
Plant growth and productivity are often limited by high root-zone temperatures (RZT) which restricts the growth of subtropical and temperate crops in the tropics. High RZT temperature coupled with low growth irradiances during cloudy days which mainly lead to poor root development and thus causes negative impact on the mineral uptake and assimilation. However, certain subtropical and temperate ...

Mulches bring several benefits to lettuce cultivation.A study on the lettuce ‘Red Rapids’ has been conducted to determine the influence of the different colored plastic mulch on its growth. The experiment consisted of five color treatments as follows; treatment 1- metallic silver (control), treatment 2- red, treatment 3- orange, treatment 4- yellow and treatment 5-green. Results showed that the...
